Shameless Self-Promotion: Getting Through, Getting Over
/As we all know, entrepreneurship was always at the bottom of my skill sets in all those aptitude thingies they used to make you take in school. I’m not a glad-hander, a salesman, and it skeeves me out even to try it.
Still, until I get my head together to learn a new music notation program — thanks, MakeMusic/Finale — I might as well put up some of my past efforts. Y’all can ignore them over here on Lichtenbergianism.com as well as over at dalelyles.com, right?
So, back in 2017, Paolo over at Southern Arc Dance Center asked me to write a thing for his troupe. At first it was going to be connected to the American Heart Association’s Red Dress campaign, but then that just kind of didn’t happen. Instead, Paolo gave me a title: “Getting Through Getting Over,” and explained that the set piece was going to be a large white square in the background.
I came through with the following suite, which is basically my Cello Sonata rearranged to add a clarinet and violin and with two new movements interpolated.
Getting Through Getting Over (2018) (a ballet score, for piano, clarinet, violin, and cello; based on the Cello Sonata, with additional material; premiered by Southern Arc Dance, Mar 17, 2018)
I. Up Against the Wall | score [pdf] | mp3
II. Perpetuum Mobile | score [pdf] | mp3
III. For Two | score [pdf] | mp3
IV. Gravity | score [pdf] | mp3
Altogether cromulent, I think. “Gravity” is my least favorite of the movements, although that final grinding chord still gives me the willies. The lyricism of “Flow” is still amazing, especially coming after that heart-clenching ending of “Gravity.” And if you are a virtuoso clarinettist, I would encourage you to give “Perpetuum Mobile” a look.
