tl;dr: Archaeologists have studied a cave in Ethiopia with "a stash of 4213 pieces, or nearly 90 pounds, of ochre, the largest such collection ever discovered at a prehistoric site in East Africa."

What is ochre?

It's a red mineral/rock that can be used in many ways, but mostly it was (and still is) used for pigment.

In other words, we painted with it.  We painted with it on rocks, on cave walls, on ourselves.  We painted with it 30,000 years ago, and we kept a stash in a cave on an ongoing basis for more than 4,000 years (!) so we'd always have it handy.
